Pulling out her best boa and bling-bling, CBC news anchor Gloria Macarenko
hosted the sixth annual Spotlight Awards Gala at the Hyatt Regency Hotel.
Presented by Women In Film and Video Vancouver (WIFVV), a non-profit society of
professionals, it recognized the achievements of Canadian women in the
entertainment industry. Honoured at the glamour-themed night of glitter, shine
and shimmer were Vicki Gabereau, Jennifer Quano, Kathryn Lynch, Shannon Kohli
and Deborah Harry.
Macarenko also hosted one of the city’s premier fashion fetes at the Fairmont
Hotel Vancouver. Holt Renfrew’s annual fashion extravaganza Glow II featured
delicious clothes, fine bubbly, fab appetizers and yummy food to keep everyone
aglow. The all-glam dinner and fashion event was in support of Arts Umbrella
Across town at the Stanley Theatre, some of Vancouver’s best female
impersonators, with memorable monikers like Vivian Von Brokenhymen, Iona Whipp
and Carlotta Gurl, strutted their high heels Vegas-style at another glamourous
and royal affair in support of direct service AIDS agencies. The fabulous and
cheesy Gouda Gabour and infamous Feather Boa hostess Joan-E hosted the annual
Fit For A Queen drag-o-rama to a “boy”-sterous sold-out house.
Vancouver Opera hosted its own chichi cocktail party for generous benefactors
at the Hotel Vancouver. CityTV’s Simi Sara and Mark Docherty hosted the musical
affair Bravo! Supporters and friends anteed up $300 per head to toast another
successful season and to enjoy a sneak preview of the company’s next season
which will include Turandot, Dialogues of the Carmelites, and Don Giovanni.
At the Westin Bayshore Resort and Marina, at the Variety International
Humanitarian Dinner, president Ory Slonim of Israel presented Joseph and Rosalie
Segal with Variety’s highest honour for their humanitarian efforts. The 2005
Variety International Convention, hosted by Variety-The Children’s Charity of
B.C. (formerly Variety Club), also saw Slonim hand over the “talking stick” to
incoming international president, Michael Forman of Los Angeles, California.
Local musician and blues superstar Jim Byrnes premiered his latest music
video “Just A Pilgrim” at a festive shindig at Alexis Restaurant. From Byrnes’
2005 Juno Award nominated album Fresh Horses, “Just A Pilgrim” features cameos
by local celebs former Canucks goalie Kirk McLean and singer/songwriter Jessie
Farrell.
